Montenegro is a country located in the southeast of Europe and on the Adriatic Sea coast of the Balkans. Surrounded by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and Croatia, the capital of the country is Podgorica.

Montenegro’s NATO Membership
Montenegro completed the steps of the membership action plan in December 2009 and received an official invitation from NATO on 2 December 2015 and negotiations were held on 19 May 2016. As a result of negotiations, it officially joined NATO on 5 June 2017.
Montenegro’s European Union Membership
Currently, Montenegro is not a member of the European Union. However, Montenegro’s European Union process was initiated in November 2005 with the negotiations held as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. However, after the independence of Montenegro with a referendum in May 2006, the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro and the European Union process was cancelled. While Serbia continues the current negotiations, in September 2006 separate negotiations with Montenegro started again. Montenegro’s European Union processes continue and its entry into the union is considered certain. Although it has not yet officially joined the European Union, Montenegrin citizens can travel visa-free to Schengen countries, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania as of 19 December 2009. It is not valid in Ireland, as Montenegro has a different visa regime for us.
