Celeste was one of the most acclaimed video games of 2018, but what you might not have actually understood is that the firmly created platformer was an expanded version of a smaller task developed in four days at a game jam. Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry developed the original Celeste for the Pico-8 platform, and now that version has a follow up called Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek
The developers, now including composer Lena Raine, state that this video game took just 3 days to make. The release is to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Celeste‘s release.

If you’re not knowledgeable about Pico-8, it’s a “virtual console” that offers designers a framework to develop video games as if it were real hardware with defined technical abilities. Games are restricted to 128 x 128 resolution, for instance, and a particular 16- color combination, which results in a distinctive appearance. Games can be accessed through the Pico-8 front end itself or distributed independently.
In Celeste 2‘s case, you can download Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi variations for free from Itch.io, or play it in your internet browser at that link. (I would highly recommend utilizing a controller, since the keyboard controls are … challenging.) The soundtrack is also offered on Bandcamp.
