Harris provided her first remarks as the freshly inaugurated vice president last night after the initial event. In her address, she referred to the inauguration as a historical moment grounded in the midst of a troubled year, formed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the revival of the Black Lives Matter motion.

” It is my honor to be a here– to stand on the shoulders of those who came before to speak tonight as your Vice President,” the vice president stated. “In lots of ways, this moment embodies our character as a nation. It demonstrates who we are, even in dark times. We not just dream. We do. We not just see what has been. We see what can be. We aim for the moon. And after that we plant our flag on it. We are vibrant, fearless, and ambitious. We are undaunted in our belief that we will conquer, that we will rise up.”

She concluded her speech by describing the “American goal” she’s experienced in common citizens. “I see it in the researchers who are changing the future. I see it in the parents who are nurturing generations to come. In the innovators and the educators. In everybody, all over who is constructing a better life on their own, their families, and their communities. This, too, is American aspiration,” she said. “This is what President Joe Biden has actually hired us to summon now. The guts to see beyond crisis, to do what is hard, to do what is great, to join, to believe in ourselves, think in our country, think in what we can do together. Thank you. And might God bless America.”
